From FIRST today:
Teams:
Our FIRST Tech Challenge Staff would like to slip you a little hint for
this year's game! The game will be released during our Kickoff on
September 19, 2007 on the www.usfirst.org website, so please watch for
updates. Now let's get guessing...
"There once was a team from old Worcester,
who pondered FIRST's game hint together.
"It's a ringer of a game;
what a curious name!
It's got two of the seventeenth letter."
Go Teams!"

How do these clues tie togetherL

ringer infers:
1. horshoes (highly doubt it)
2. basketball (buzzer shot, ringer)
3. soccer maybe
It's got two of the seventeenth letter

IDK but maybe the seventeenth letter part means the seventeenth letter of the hint which I believe is M

I think that it is referring to the alphabet, which in this case would be the letter
Q

I think Q might be a good clue. Maybe something to do with quarters? Also as was already stated m is the seventeenth letter of the hint. That seems almost more likely. Maybe the name of the game is something like M.... M.... It wouldn't be the first time FIRST started the game names with the same letter for example:
Rug Rage, Ramp 'n Roll, Hexagon Havoc, Torroid Terror, Ladder Logic, Diabolical Dynamics, Zone Zeal, Rack 'n Roll.
A ringer can also infer something like a juggernaut.
The Worcester reference probably refers to Team 190 from WPI, although beyond that I'm not sure what it could mean.
The part about pondering together seems to indicate that maybe teamwork among the alliances will play more of a roll.

But quarters does not have 2 letter q's

The word itself doesn't I was suggesting that that may be one of the words in the name.

Did Worcester Polytechnic Institute Robotics make any guesses last year, about anything???
"It's a ringer of a game;
IIRC the "ringer" was the Inflatable Tube that was on the Rack in Rack and Roll for FRC 2007.
what a curious name!
Unusual Spelling or Pronoucation
It's got two of the seventeenth letter."
'Q' has been mentioned as the 17th letter.. Any words with two 'Q''s?? Or is it Two Words beginning with 'Q'??
From FIRST today:

"
"
"Curious" implies a "Question", which starts with a 'q'

Not too hard...
A quick search of 'Worcester ringer' led to this:
http://www.wdcra.org.uk
But of course, we're not tossing bells... But rings associated with 'UK'
Which are of course: Quoits...
http://www.quoits.info
Fortunately most of our teams (all) look better than these guys...
Since the 'Quoits' are ringers that don't ring we're figuring:
"Quiet Quoits" or more scientifically, "Quoit Quotient", or "Quadralateral Quoits"
Or maybe there is a bell in there for fun...
At least we'll all run rings around eachother.
Are we close?

Q is pronounced "cue" which in England means to get in line.

The Quoits sounds like the best clue so far. It has rings and starts with a Q. A ring is not something that wouldn't be used as a game object. Also I sent an email off to someone I know on Worcester Polytechnic Institute team 190 to ask if he had anything to add. As soon as he gets back to me I'll let you guys know what he said.

True, but I thought that it is spelled Queue (or do we spell it Queue??).

I believe the clue refers to the letter Q - and therefore the word CUE. As in Pool Cue. The game piece will have two sticks - called cue(s).
Now for the fun part, pick up the cue with your robot, and duel with another robot like a knight in shining armor - jousting!!
The ringer part is of course curious - perhaps referring to HOW horseshoes is scored rather than horseshoes itself (close counts).
We shall know shortly.

I believe the "Ringer" refers to the Venetian Bell Tower on the WPI campus. Also, in Old Worcester there is a similar Venetian Bell Tower (UK). Each day a "ringer" runs up the tower to "ring the bell". My guess is that the new FTC game will involve climbing a tower and ringing a bell.
Not sure what the seveneth letter is (?)

im going with the game quoits. it has 2 17th numbers
Q-17th from the start of the alphabet
and...
I-17th from the end!
and it has the ring as its game piece,
and its played in worcester.
im sayin it'll be similar to quoits.

I think the game will be a word-game resembling Boggle.
A bunch of letters will be dumped on the playing field and the teams will have to arrange them into words to create a nonsensical limerick.
You get bonus points if your limerick superficially appears to make some sense; but really doesn't.
You earn a perfect score if all the referees and judges at the event each come up with different interpretations of your limerick's intent.
;) :)

If your guesses are right this years seams like it might be a little harder than last years hang-n-around. I personally think it's going to be a mini game game like FRC did last year with a few modifications. LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!
